Deregulated Energy in Texas

Don’t lose out on low rates in Texas

Texas is first in deregulated energy in the nation

Texas residents are lucky to have many options to choose from when it comes to choosing their energy providers.

While many across the nation, unfortunately, live in regulated markets where they can’t do much to save on their electric bills, Texans enjoy the most freedom to choose the energy plan that fits them and a healthy competitive energy market that allows them to save money.

Although there are other states that also have a deregulated energy market, no other state comes close to having it as widely available. The numbers speak for themselves. For example, when comparing how many residential consumers enjoy the advantages of energy competition. Texas is 1st in the nation with 87%, Ohio coming in 2nd at a distant 46%, and Illinois trailing 3rd at 35%.

If you live in Texas, you are probably fortunate to live in an area that allows a deregulated energy market, if so, it’s important that you don’t miss the opportunity to shop around for a plan that will provide you with the best rates.

History

In the far past all energy providers started out as a competitive deregulated market, however, due to rising costs and failing infrastructure, in 1935 the government stepped in and regulated the market in an attempt to curb these issues.

As times have changed, so have the markets, with the government shifting its position as it realized that consumer choice would be advantageous to all, ushering in competition and driving prices down.

Efforts to deregulate the energy market have been going on for a while, supporting legislation passing as early as 1975, but it was only as recently as 2002 that the Texas retail electric market was truly made open and available to private consumers.

NOW is the time to enjoy lower rates, switching to a more competitive plan that fits for you can save you every month!

Deregulated Energy = Choice & Cheap

The flow of energy is composed of several phases, originated in Generation, then Transmission, and finally Distribution.

In a deregulated energy market, your choice as a consumer generally comes into play at the Distribution stage, where you can choose between different Retail Electricity Providers (REP), each offering their own plans at different rates and terms.

This allows you to choose the best plan that fits your needs, and shop around for the best price. The availability of consumer choice drives REPs to compete with each other on price and terms, each trying to win you, the consumer, over by offering cheaper more flexible plans.

You should definitely take advantage of the market competition to find the best rate around, don’t wait to save with a no-hassle switch TODAY!

Can I enjoy retail electric choice?

The quickest, easiest way to find out if you have the option to choose between competitive electric rates, just head over to the SlashPlan rate comparison tool, and put your zip code in! We’ll tell you right away what your options are for the best savings with the best plan for you.

Not all areas in Texas offer the benefits of deregulated energy, some consumers live in an area serviced outside of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Regional Transmission Organization, and others live in an area where the electricity is serviced at fixed rates by the local municipality or a utility co-op (which may be exempt from the state’s retail choice program mandate).

The good news is the majority of Texas state residents do enjoy choice when it comes to choosing an electric plan, including many of the largest cities such as Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth.

To check if you live in an area that has a retail electricity choice, you can see if you are serviced by a Transmission and Delivery Utility (TDU) company that allows for a deregulated market.
