Denis O’Hare has been filming “Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive” at Fort Independence on Castle Island since late last week. He plays the part of Poe, and is the only actor in the dramatized portion of the 90-minute documentary.

“I remember as a kid being freaked out by ‘Hop-Frog’ and ‘The Pit and the Pendulum,’ ” O’Hare said, of being a fan of the writer. “I don’t think you can be an American and grow up escaping Poe.”

The documentary, is slated to air in 2016, but PBS hasn’t chosen a broadcast date just yet and is being made for the “American Masters” series, and will focus on Poe’s last days in 1849, when the author went missing, turned up in Baltimore, and mysteriously died at the age of 40. The local production has been in the works for years; director Eric Stange, of Arlington-based Spy Pond Productions, was brought to the project by Baltimore filmmaker Wally Coberg. After Coberg died of a heart attack in 2011, Stange continued planning and fund-raising for the film, and wound up securing a $500,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Now in production, the local crew includes wig master Joe Rossi, who’s on hair and makeup; costume designer Virginia Johnson, producer Jennifer Dubilier, and wardrobe supervisor/set costumer Liz Clifford, who also worked on “The Fighter” and “Black Mass.”

The Spy Pond Production company just posted a photo of Denis filming on Instagram.  See it  below:
