Delicious Filipino Meals at Nana Yang’s Homemade Cuisine – Katipunan, QC

By Clari @clarisaysblog

Katipunan Avenue is a special place for students, groups of friends and families; not to mention, a bustling beehive. When I was in college, I always felt that "Katips" has everything I need. School supplies? No worries! The National Book Store is always there. Hungry? That's easy as there are several fast-food chains open.

Don't like fast food? Well, the whole stretch of Katipunan Avenue features several coffee shops and restaurants. But if you want something close to home there is a new food kiosk in the area called Nana Yang's Homemade Cuisine.

Nana Yang's Homemade Cuisine

Do you know the saying, "Nothing beats the flavour of home?" That is absolutely true and the same goes with Nana Yang's Homemade Cuisine as they share their great grandmother, Nanay Toyang's lovely specialties like the classic fried chicken and suman sa lihia.

Besides these, Nana Yang's Homemade Cuisine also offers other Filipino classics such as Calumpit garlic longganisa, crispy pata, dinakdakan, lechon bagnet, and sisig to name a few. You can enjoy them as rice meals which range from P120-P150. But if you are dining in with family or friends, they have platters you can avail or go UNLI which is applicable to certain dishes. Take note, their fried chicken (leg and thigh part only) is available in platter and bucket.

So how are their dishes? My family and I got to try their classic fried chicken which is one of their specialties, dinakadakan, suman sa lihia and suman sa tsokolate. My favourite would be the classic fried chicken (Platter P450). It's crispy and juicy but unlike the ones we have in fast food chains as this has a distinct taste that says home.

The dinakdakan (Platter P290), a popular Ilocano dish made up of grilled pork parts - face, ears, liver and tongue - is delicious, too. In fact, my abuelita (lola) and uncle liked the dinakdakan. Nana Yang's Homemade Cuisine surely did not skimp on flavour.

And there is no better way to end a lovely Filipino meal than with a dessert. Nana Yang's Homemade Cuisine offers native delicacies such as suman sa lihia (P90) and suman sa tsokolate (P90).

Suman sa lihiya; lihia is a rice cake made from glutinous rice wrapped in banana leaves then boiled. It is served with coconut and some raw sugar. Nana Yang's Homemade Cuisine's suman sa lihia comes with latik sauce and latik topping. My grandmother truly enjoyed this one. I couldn't blame her as the suman has a smooth and delightfully sticky texture.

And since I am a chocolate-lover, suman sa tsokolate is definitely my pick! The chocolate is not too sweet, just right for the suman's lovely texture.

Would you like to try their dishes, too? You can find them at Unit 2, Ground Floor of Crowne One Condominium along Esteban Abada and F. Dela Rosa St. Brgy. Loyola Heights in Katipunan, Quezon City, just across Ateneo gate 3 and right behind KFC.
