Deadly road accident in Bahawalpur claimed 26 lives
At least 26 people were killed and a dozen injured in the deadly head-on collusion between a passenger wagon and truck in Bahawalpur on Tuesday, TV reports said.
According to rescue sources, the van was en route to Ahmedpur Sharqia from Bahawalpur when it had a collision with a truck that was coming from the opposite direction.
The injured include seven women and one child from the same family.
The rescue teams rushed injured and dead bodies to the Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital and other nearby hospital. Some injured are reported in critical condition and casualty toll is likely to climb.
The rescuers had to cut through the smashed metal of van to take out bodies and the injured.
“The impact was so great that the passenger bus turned into a twisted heap of metal, trapping the victims inside,” said Riaz Ajmal, a duty officer at the Rescue 1122 emergency services.
The survivors told that the crash occurred due to the breakage of van’s tie-rod after which the driver lost control of the vehicle. However police said the accident was caused by over-speed.
Careless driving, over-loading, over-speeding and below-par roads are the main culprits of the accidents in the country, which annually claim thousands of lives.
