DC Announces New Creative Team, New Direction on BATGIRL

Well, it finally happened.  You could just feel that a change on Batgirl was coming and today DC announced that Gail Simone is no longer on Batgirl.  There is a new creative team, but that isn’t the biggest change.  As you can see from the image above, they are changing more than the creative folks on the book.  Barbara Gordon is going from one of the most dynamic women in the DCU to a “young adult” that makes no sense at all with what they have built so far.Simone has done a wonderful job with Batgirl, but even a fan like myself felt that some of the stories lately were lacking.  Honestly, I think her best work is being done over on Red Sonja right now.  Even with that, to just take her back to being a teenager with a costume redesign and a more playful look, it just doesn’t ring true to me.  I’m all for a lighter tone on the book, but this just seems that they are changing things way too radically for me.  I love the character of Batgirl and will be watching closely as issue #35 hits, but on the surface, it looks like another DC misfire of a great female character.
DC Comics has announced that Cameron Stewart (BATMAN INC.,THE MULTIVERSITY), Brenden Fletcher (WEDNESDAYCOMICS), and rising star Babs Tarr will take over as the creative team of BATGIRL starting in October with issue #35.
Barbara Gordon is no stranger to dusting herself off when disaster strikes… so when a fire destroys everything she owned, she spots the opportunity for a new lease on life — and seizes it! Following the rest of Gotham’s young adults to the hip border district of Burnside, Barbara sets about building an all-new Batgirl… and discovers all-new threats preying on her peers!BATGIRL #35 arrives on October 8th.Head on over to DCCOMICS.com for more.
