Barcelos
It was probably the worst day of 2017 thus far to be traveling around Portugal, but we were optimistic and brought our German visitor north of Porto for a day trip, anyway.
When the weather is inclement, there are always places to duck into during heavy rain: churches, museums, or cafés, for example. While Northern Portugal typically receives more precipitation than the rest of the country, it’s usually periodic versus continuous, and the temperatures generally stay above 10C.
Today, however, was stormy and out of the norm. In fact, we had to leave Ice the Dog in the car during lunch because none of the restaurants had patio service. This is such a rarity that the last time I remember having to do this was February 2015!
Due to the weather, I took very few pictures — mostly from my phone as we were dodging sheets of rain — but here are a few from the city of Barcelos and one from Vila do Conde. We visited Vila do Conde first, then Barcelos, Ponte de Lima, and detoured through Peneda-Gerês National Park before heading home. (If you click on any of those links, you will see these places in much better weather.)
