Day Trip to Landmannalaugar

By Wanderingjoshua

The first time I sae views of Landmannalaugar online, I decided that I'll include it if I ever got the chance to visit Iceland. Thankfully, I was able to go in a trip to Europe. I had to plan my trip around summer because it was the only time when the roads to the area are open. Once autumn and winter set in, the roads are frequently closed.

If you're short on time, I would recommend a day trip to Landmannalaugar from Reykjavik.

Landmannalaugar in a Nutshell

Located in Iceland's highlands, Landmannalaugar draws visitors with its unique and beautiful landscapes. During the summer, visitors can explore its hiking trails on a day trip or a longer adventure where they can go camping in the mountains. The distinguishable features of this part of the country are the vibrant and colorful rhyolite mountains. You'll also see ice and lava fields when you visit. This mix of colors create a tunning backdrop for photos.

Day Trip to Landmannalaugar from Reykjavik

You have options when it comes to transportation that can get you to Landmannalaugar.

By Car

You can't just drive any car to Landmannalaugar. You'll need one that's suitable for F-roads. You can rent an SUV for the highlands that costs around US$1,000 (approximately 135,500 Icelandic Krona or ISK) for 3 days. This price includes insurance (full protection and zero liability). I recommend renting a car in advance during the summer season. In my opinion, renting a vehicle is only worth it when you maximize its occupancy and everyone pays their share.

By Bus

You can take the bus to Landmannalaugar from Reykjavik. This option is only available in the summer. You can check schedules and prices here: Landmannalaugar bus.

Join a Tour

For thos who don't drive or traveling alone, you might want to consider joining a tour. However, tours to Landmannalaugar are expensive but still cost less than renting an F-road vehicle for a day if you're alone.

I booked my tour through GetYourGuide, you can book here: Landmannalaugar tour

Exploring Landmannalaugar

I joined a tour because I was traveling alone. The trip had a set itinerary but I didn't mind. Our first stop was a beautiful waterfall called Haifoss.

The canyon was just as spectacular as the view of the waterfalls.

We drove through beautiful landscapes and some volcanoes. After arriving at the park, the guide paid for the entrance fee and briefed us about our hike.

Then we were off!

The loop including one of the peaks with overlooking views took around 3-4 hours to complete. I was fortunate with the weather. The sky was a bit cloud but didn't obscure the views. It wasn't raining as well. It was windy so bring a jacket, a bonnet, and maybe a scarf. The trail was easy, manageable, and straightforward.

We visited a couple of waterfalls before returning to Reykjavik. The tour I booked costs around ISK 28,000 it includes the driver/guide, fees, and transportation. You'll have to bring your own food or buy it from the camp in Landmannalaugar. You can book your tour here.
