Daptone To Release The Poets of Rhythm Anthology

Like many folks, my first exposure to the German funksters known as The Poets of Rhythm was in 2006 when Daptone reissued their amazing 1992 debut album Practice What You Preach.  The record was an immediate sensation in the deep funk and funk-revival circles, but just as when they first started, the band’s raw funky sound just couldn’t connect with a larger audience the way some similar groups managed to do around the same time.  Now, the fine folks at Daptone are giving us The Poets of Rhythm:  Anthology 1992 – 2003 (planned release October 1st) that not only features some familiar tracks, but also a bunch of hard to find 7-inch tracks the group put out over the years under various other band names (which they did quite a bit in the late 1990′s).

Check out one of their classic tracks “More Mess On My Thing” below, along with the original 1999 version of Lyrics Born “I Changed My Mind” which features The Poets of Rhythm as his backing band (the more well-known version of this tune is the Stereo MC’s 2004 remix).
