According to prosecutors, an Orange County man, 26-year-old Joshua Allen Robey, was caught on camera punching, strangling, shaking and trying to suffocate his 2-month-old son, back in October 2011.
This and more was revealed in a trial that started Thursday, charging Robey with attempted murder, torture and child abuse with a sentencing enhancement for causing great bodily injury to a child under 5 years old.
"The D.A.'s office said the camera caught Robey strangling, slapping and punching his baby in the chest. He was also seen wrapping a blanket around the baby's neck, lifting the blanket like a noose, and swinging the baby around for more than a minute. Robey also grabbed his son by the throat, lifted him in the air and shook him over and over, prosecutors said."
According to reports, when the jury saw the video evidence they cried with their hands over their mouths, shaking their head in horror while watching the 55-minute camera footage.
The baby's mother, Eva Ponce, set up the camera because she believed Robey was cheating on her, but what she captured horrified her so much she could not even watch the whole thing. Before watching the footage, Ponce told Robey she had a camera set up and he admitted he "he hurt the baby a little," and that she wouldn't like it, then begged her to delete the footage.
The infant suffered fractured ribs, bleeds to the brain and liver injuries, according to Daphne Wong, a pediatrician at Children's Hospital of Orange County, who treated him after the assault.
