Straddling the border of Salzburg, Styria and Upper Austria, the Salzkammergut cycle path passes through a magical mountain world and by the crystal clear waters of the Austrian Lake District.
From start to finish 345km
Bad Aussee is at the trailhead of the Styrian Salzkammergut cycle path, which extends for 345 km through some of Europe’s most ancient massifs. Its exceptional feature is that it stretches across three Austrian Provinces – Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria. It is a loop trail that can be accessed at any village along the route.
The Salzkammergut cycle path has access and exit points for other Styrian cycle trails. For example at Bad Mitterndorf it meets the Enns cycle path into Upper Austria.
Styrian Lakes in Salzkammergut region
The Salzkammergut cycle path is ideal for touring and trekking bikes, but especially family cycling. It passes 13 of Austria’s most beautiful lakes including:
- Hallstatter See lake, a popular destination for divers;
- Altausee Lake, with a seismically active tectonic fault line that frequently gives rise to small earthquakes;
- and Lake Grundlsee, often referred to as ‘das Steirische Meer’ (the Styrian sea), the largest lake in the state of Styria.
The best time to cycle the Salzkammergut cycle path is early summer and early Autumn, when the weather is warm and traffic is light.
Now is a good time to think about booking your spring or summer cycling holiday. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like to stay in a traditional style holiday chalet right on the edge of Styria’s cycle trails.
Flights to airports in or near Austria are very competitive and transfers through some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe are truly enjoyable.
