Creation Stories: THE VARE

Posted on the 10 July 2017 by Music Creates Us @musiccreatesus

Montreal, QC natives and indie-pop/R&B group The Vare announce the release of their new music video “Spot Dark,” via The 405. The music video directed by Gaston D’Antos explores the psyche of a young woman, and you can watch the video below.  The track comes from their EP, Shapes, which is out now!

The Vare, comprised of Mikey Desjardins (vocals, guitar, drums) and Lucas Liberatore (guitar, bass, and piano), began writing music in 2013 and subsequently dropped their EP Letterbox, which helped propel them into a mini-tour spawning across cities in Montreal and Chicago.

Read more about how the band got their start below.

How did the duo come together?

We started off as three and added Lucas later on in the development of our sound. After a great two years as a quartet, we started to change our sound and began writing our EP, Shapes, as a trio. We are now a duo working on new music and we are very happy to see the development of our music over the years.

Who or what has inspired your sound and latest track “Spot Dark?”

Our sound is influenced by our love for R&B music and electronic music. We love listening to artists that push boundaries with their writing process such as Bon Iver, Banks and Frank Ocean. Listening to these artists really influenced the development of “Spot Dark.”

Is there a story behind your band name?

The story behind the band name is a funny one. While looking for a band name Mikey(lead singer), was drinking an Arizona Green Tea, and when he turned the can around, he read the french translation of Green Tea which is “Thé Vert” in an English accent. We all had a good laugh and then decided that it would be the band name. We then changed the spelling to THE VARE.

What is your favorite show memory?

Our favorite show memory was when we won the local battle of the bands to then move on to opening up for AWOLNATION and Sam Roberts at the “Festival d’été du Québec”. It was the biggest show we’ve ever played. We got the change to hang out backstage with the artists and it was an overall incredible experience.

What would be your dream tour and why?

Our dream tour would be to tour around the world along side the bands that influenced our sound. Just playing outdoor festivals with artists in multiple genres would be a blessing.

Tell us about your writing process; any unusual quirks?

The writing process is pretty much always the same process. We usually jam on a keyboard and mumble random melodies to each other.

What’s your favorite song to cover?

We don’t usually play covers. We actually just started recording some. We recently released a cover of the song “Passionfruit” by Drake. So you guys should check that out.

If you were to create a “soundtrack to your life,” what songs would be on it?

The soundtrack to our lives, would probably be filled with a bunch of old school soul and funk music and some 90s hip hop.
