Create a Coloring Page With Photoshop

Coloring is one of my favorite activities to do with my kids. Not only is it a great way to relax and have some fun, but it’s also a great way to teach them about color theory and other basic concepts. If you’re looking for a way to get in on the coloring action, why not try creating your own coloring page? In this article, I’ll show you how to create a simple coloring page using Photoshop.

For this explanation, I am using Adobe Photoshop 2022.

First, open Photoshop and load the image you want to make into a coloring page. I chose a Free image from pexel.com. Since I enjoy coloring horses, I really wanted to use this image.

Tip: When choosing an image to create a coloring page, you get best results from an image that doesn’t have a lot going on in the background.

Once you have your image open, the first step is to duplicate the image. You do this by selecting the image and then pressing ctrl+J. This will create a copy of your image that you can work on. Or you can also right-click on the layer and click Duplicate Layer.

You can name the layer if you like, but this is not necessary to achieve what you need for this tutorial, so just hit OK to proceed.

Make sure you are on the duplicated layer before proceeding to the next step.

We now need to desaturate this layer. You can do that by going to the top menu and placing your mouse cursor over Image > Adjustments > Desaturate and clicking Desaturate.

The picture should now be black and white and the results should look like this:

Now you need to make a duplicate of this layer. Again, you may press Ctrl+J on your keyboard or right click this layer and click Duplicate layer.

You should now have 3 layers like this:

We now need to invert this layer. You can do that by going to the top menu and placing your mouse cursor over Image > Adjustments > Invert and clicking Invert.

The image should now look like this:

Now making sure you are on the same layer, we will be changing the layer option by clicking the arrow next to Normal, to drop down the layer option menu. You will then choose Color Dodge from the drop-down menu.

Depending on the image it may look almost blank, but don’t worry; just proceed.

The last step is to change the images filter. Do so by navigating to the top menu and put your cursor over filter, then other, and select minimum.

You will be adjusting the radius to your liking. For this example, I set my image to a radius of 3.

This is the end result.
