Crazy-looking Hyperion XP-1 Fuel Cell Hypercar Seen Driving on Public Roads

Last summer, a Southern California-based company called Hyperion made its debut a wild hydrogen-powered hypercar called the XP-1. The company called the XP-1 concept a "teaching aid," but there is apparently more to it than that, as it took the XP-1 for a spin on the streets of Las Vegas Friday from Motor1, according to a published report.

In case you forgot, the Hyperion XP-1 is a hydrogen fuel cell powered car that claims a range of 1,000 miles per hydrogen tank, 1,500 horsepower, a 0-60 time of about 2.2 seconds, and a top speed of 221 mph Interestingly, Hyperion claims that there are no batteries on board to store energy (as we see on the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, for example), which reduces weight.

Despite the lack of a physical CES That year Hyperion decided to go to Vegas anyway and drove the XP-1 up and down the Strip and into the desert. We don't know exactly how fast it was going or what the company was doing in the desert, but it's interesting to see how the car is camouflaged considering it has already been seen without it.

Hyperion plans to put the XP-1 on sale to the public from 2022, with the majority of its planned 300-vehicle production slated for 2023.

Hyperion did not immediately respond to Roadshow's request for comment.
