Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said the spread of COVID-19 is under effective control in Uttar Pradesh despite it being the most populous state, and emphasised that prevention is the only cure for the virus until a vaccine is found. Addressing a review meeting, the chief minister also mentioned his visits to Basti, Gorakhpur, Azamgarh and Varanasi divisions in the past two days. He said the coronavirus situation in Uttar Pradesh is in a better position as "good work" has been done in all areas. "Despite being the most populous state, the spread of COVID-19 is under effective control. Till a vaccine for the coronavirus is found, prevention is the only cure," Adityanath was quoted as having said in a statement issued here. "A small mistake can be dangerous. The initiative to provide relief to poor and check spread of the virus has given good results," he said. How many in Indian media would appreciate Yogiji and the Uttar Pradesh !
Corona news dampens - Tamil Nadu on Wednesday recorded the biggest daily spike in coronavirus cases with 1,927 fresh ones, taking its tally to 36,841. The state also recorded 19 deaths in the last 24 hours. With a steep rise in cases, the total number of infected persons in the state now reached 36,841. Of the 1,927 cases, Chennai has reported 1,390. The state capital's total now stands at 25,937. The growth of novel Coronavirus cases in Haryana is showing no signs of slowing down. On Wednesday, the state added 355 new cases to take its total number of confirmed cases to 5,209. In the process, it overtook Andhra Pradesh and is now just outside the top ten list of states with highest number of cases in India. Nearly 70 per cent of the confirmed cases in the state are concentrated in just three districts – Gurugram, Faridabad and Sonepat. Owing to their close proximity to Delhi, the Haryana government had initially attributed the increase to an overflow of cases in Delhi which too has been witnessing a steady rise in infections. The Delhi government said that 1,501 COVID-19 cases, 384 recovered/discharged/migrated and 48 deaths were reported in the National Capital on Wednesday. The total number of positive cases in the national capital rises to 32,810, including 12,245 recovered/discharged/migrated and 984 deaths: Government of Delhi. What is to be seen and appreciated that in India the total of 2.80 lakhs shows 135251 as affected and 137856 as recovered !
A graph shared Sunday on Twitter by senior journalist Fahd Husain indicated a significant difference in the response of Pakistan and Uttar Pradesh to the coronavirus and how the former failed to curb the deadly infection despite having demographics similar to that of the Indian state. The statistics — compiled from scientific publication "Our World in Data," Pakistan's population census from 2017, and the World Bank — showed that a strict lockdown in India's UP state to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus yielded commendable results. In Pakistan, on the other hand, the death rate shot up exponentially, as of June 7, as the country had quite a lenient lockdown that was prematurely eased by Prime Minister Imran Khan. While Pakistan and the Indian state have similar populations, 208 million and 225 million, respectively, the density per kilometer is vastly different. Both also have similar number of people aged 45 or more, at almost 40 million each and even the literacy rate is not much different — 59% in Pakistan and 68% in India's UP. Pakistan recorded its significant disease kickoff on March 29, whereas India registered it April 15. The graph states that the significant disease kickoff indicates the "day a territorial jurisdiction hits a cumulative death toll of 10".
