COVID-19: Less Than 1,000 New Cases in Delhi, a First in 49 Days

India last week became the third country, after the United States and Brazil, to exceed one million cases. But many experts believe this figure is much lower than the reality, because the detection rate remains low.

More than 28 000 sick people perished. The state of Maharashtra (west), where Bombay and its slums is located, is the most affected, ahead of the national capital and Tamil Nadu (south).

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed strict confinement at the end of March, but it has been greatly relaxed in recent months to reduce its impact on the economy.

Apart from the federal government, several states have tightened local restrictions as cases have increased, particularly in Bangalore, Bihar and parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

On Monday, the authorities of West Bengal (east), the state where 49 live, announced a confinement two days a week.

The small state of Sikkim (northeast), bordering Tibet, also ordered confinement on Monday until 24 July.

It was from Delhi that the rare good news of the day came, with the impression of a ebb of the crisis which had reached its peak in June, when hospitals and morgues seemed on the verge of s 'collapse.

In total, 954 new cases were announced on Tuesday. A report that falls below the 1000 contamination mark for the first time in 49 days. At the end of June, the authorities counted nearly 4000 for every 21 hours.
