Vavuniya High Court Judge Manikkavasagar Ilancheliyan sentenced an Army corporal to ten years rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday for shooting and killing a junior officer at the Vallipunam Army camp in Pudukudiirippu, Mullaithivu.
In addition to the prison sentence, the judge imposed a fine of Rs.100,000 and also announced that the prison sentence will be extended by another year if the fine is not paid.
The crime took place in March 2012 due to an argument with an officer over leave. Five military officers who served in the Army camp on that day testified as witnesses in this trial. The High Court Judge delivering the verdict stated that there was no evidence that the accused had acted with the intention of killing the deceased.
