DIG Sanjeewa Dharmaratne, in charge of the Central Province has received a lot of information that a former Police officer of the Kandy Police Crime Division has been active in covering up certain crimes committed by a criminal named Pathum, who had poured petrol and set fire to a student who had passed the GCE O/Level examination with flying colours, in Ampitiya, Kandy.
Police information stated that this officer has by now been removed from the Kandy Police Crimes Division. However, Kandy Police revealed information that a sacked Police officer is now in tow with a certain politician in order to obtain the post of an Officer-In-Charge of a Police station.
Due to non-payment of extortion money, a three-wheeler driver named Duraj Madushanka had been tied to a lamp post and beaten with a sword by a criminal named Pathum and some of his minions at Mee Kanuwa Junction in Ampitiya on November 7. It is stated that the relevant Police officer had taken action to end the investigation as a crime which was solved and presented in court, without any charges against him, the criminal named Pathum regarding the attack on the person and had been caught together with two drug addicts engaged in taking drugs with Pathum.
It is apparent that due to this particular Police officer’s actions, people of Ampitiya had hesitated to complain to the police regarding the criminal Pathum. Information is currently being revealed that there were cases in the past within the Kandy Police, where people who had come to complain against Pathum were harassed before writing the complaint and were then forced to face a situation where they were unable to lodge the complaint at all.
