It’s often in the kitchen when the battle of the sexes really heats up. Around one third of people say that rivalry is rife in the kitchen, with half of them competing for the honor of top chef.
Who is the cook in your household, mom or dad? Research has found that only 15 per cent of kids prefer dad’s food to mum’s, but despite the kids’ preferences, 35 per cent of men believe that they are more experimental and adventurous with their food.
So, if you think of yourself as some kind of super-dad that can beat mum’s cooking, you’ll need an awesome kitchen space to work in. Wave goodbye to the frilly 1950s look and open up your mind to a luxurious and sleek kitchen with a real masculine feel.
Open plan extremes
Open plan styles are always popular but if you want something extreme then remove the cabinet doors for a truly open style. This will create a very rustic look and make it much easier to use. Make sure you paint the inside of the cabinets and arrange everything neatly though, otherwise you’re open plan design will just look cluttered.
No man is an island
Kitchen islands are all the rage these days, but if you’re proving yourself to be super-dad, you don’t want to latch on to an old trend. Put a twist on this popular idea by installing a butcher’s block on the worktop. There really is no way to get more masculine than having a large hunk of wood on a central work surface.
Create a chill out space
If the kitchen is now your domain, you can do what you want in it. That includes relaxing. Instead of a formal dining table, why not create a space that allows you to chill out as well as cook and entertain? Catch up with your loved ones as you cook and make mealtimes a relaxed family get-together.
Get inspired
Creating a masculine kitchen is all about breaking the mold and daring to be different, but to do this you need to be inspired first. Look at other kitchens and cruise the net for any design tips that you may not have considered – you’ll be surprised by what you might find.
