Right outside the West Gate of the fabled Edwards AFB is a display of aircraft called the Century Circle, aircraft that were tested here. Beginning with the prototype flight in 1956, the F-106 has had a long history at Edwards. In 1959 an F-106 set a world speed record of 1,525 mph here. Last used in a drone program, this aircraft was acquired in 2003 and restored in the markings of the 329th Fighter Interceptor Squadron that had a detachment stationed at Edwards in the 1960’s. The F-106B was a two-seat, combat-capable trainer. Interestingly (for the aerodynamicists), due to the extra seat, the fuselage is actually better area ruled. Nikon D500 w/18-200mm.
