Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said that the demand of the people is for the President and the Government to step down and not a new Cabinet.

Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, he said that the Government has absolutely no plan to resolve the burning issues, such as fuel shortage, gas and power and has simply appointed new faces to the Cabinet which is pointless.

He added that so far the Government has not presented any mechanism to address these issues and said that appointing a new Cabinet is a ploy to hoodwink the people. However, he said that the people are not gullible and they are adamant about their demands.

He also said that the SJB is scheduled to meet other groups tomorrow including the Government MPs who have chosen to sit independently.

Attanayake expressed confidence that they could win the No Confidence Motion (NCM) against the Government with the support of the majority in Parliament.

“We are certain we could garner the votes to win the NCM because I am sure all Parliamentarians have a conscience and they know in their hearts what the people want. Moreover, they have to do what the people demand as they will eventually have to face the people when they return to their respective areas. Therefore, we are certain they will do the right thing,” he said.

Referring to the current wave of protests he said the public is demanding the immediate resignation of the President and the entire Government, not the appointment of a new Cabinet.

He said that when the Government is toppled through the NCM, the President would have to resign if he has even a semblance of conscience.

Attanayake also noted that the Opposition parties are scheduled to meet tomorrow to discuss future plans.
