Three hundred and sixty-one days ago (October 22, 2016 to be even MORE precise!), my eldest Urchin had some friends over for a belated birthday celebration. The menu for this gathering included pre-teen friendly fare such as Dominos Pizza, Doritos, Cheetos, popcorn, a chocolate chip cookie cake, and last but not least, oodles of candy.
After the "dinner" portion of the festivities was over, the boys moved to the family room for a screening of Central Intelligence which stars The Rock and Philly's own Kevin Hart. During the movie screening, I did what any relatively sane father would do: I laid low in the kitchen, pondering what I'd like to drink.
Whilst munching on some Tropical Flavored Skittles, I remembered that I had a bottle of Stiggins' Fancy Plantation Pineapple Rum in the liquor cabinet (it was probably the Pineapple Passion Fruit Skittle that triggered my memory). We (and by we I of course mean Limpd and I) reviewed this pineapple flavored Rum way back in October of 2015, and I liked it so much that I bought a full-sized bottle with the intention of trying it in a few cocktails. Although I mentioned in our review that I'd like to try this rum in a Rum Sour, that wasn't what I was in the mood for at the time. Simple and straighforward to make is what I was after, so I decided on something that would focus on the pineapple Rum. The cocktail I settled on was a variation of the Old Fashioned. The name of my creation: The Stiggins' Fancy Old Fashioned.
Here's how you make The Stiggins' Fancy Old Fashioned...
Ingredients:
- 1 sugar cube or 1/2 teaspoon loose sugar
- 3 dashes Angostura Orange Bitters
- Club soda or water
- 2 ounces Stiggins' Fancy Plantation Pineapple Rum
- Orange peel
- Luxardo Maraschino Cherry
Method: Place the sugar cube or 1/2 teaspoon loose sugar in an Old-Fashioned glass. Wet it down with 2 or 3 dashes of Angostura Orange Bitters and a short splash of water or club soda. Muddle the sugar/bitters/water slurry with a wooden muddler or the back of a bar spoon (or whatever implement that you choose to use). Rotate the glass so that the sugar grains and bitters give it a lining. Add a large ice cube. Pour in the Stiggins' Fancy Plantation Pineapple Rum. Give it a stir. Garnish with orange peel and a Maraschino cherry. DRINK!
