Verdict on Clerks III

Characters

Randal is a co-owner of the convenience store, he suffers a heart attack and decides he wants to make a movie about his life. He has put together a script and ropes his friends to play themselves in the events of the store. Randal puts this on the fast track to be the most important part of his day.

Dante is Randal’s best friend and co-owner of the store. He is still grieving the death of his loved one and nearly seeing his best friend die has hit him differently. Dante helps Randal with his project but deep down he needs to learn to face the truth about what comes next in his life.

In the supporting characters, we have the returning Jay and Silent Bob, who provide fun loud moments. Elias goes through different spells as each day goes past. Along with a host of regulars to the store.

Performances

Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson are both fantastic in the leading roles in the movie. They show the chemistry that has kept them together for all these years. Bringing an emotional weight to getting older and facing one’s own mortality. The rest of the returning cast shines in the movie showing the connection made between everyone throughout the years.

Story

The story follows two aging clerks that go through a sudden mid-life crisis when one has a heart attack. It sends them down a path to make a movie about their time at the store. This shows them coming together with their friends to make this dream a reality.

The movie shows how important in making the most of your life, from chasing dreams or surrounding yourself with the best people. There is a massive emotional core behind everything in this movie. It is also clear that the inspiration behind this story comes from Kevin Smith’s own experience. This is a wonderful story that gets every beat of the story correct to make us care about the characters that we first met back in the 90s.

The comedy in the movie hits very well, with Jason Mewes’s energy coming through in the supporting role. Pop culture references feel like they go through the generations and much like ‘Jay and Silent Bob Reboot’. We get another story that shows the test of time from loved characters.
