Classy Cell Phone Makeover

By Heyimryanhurley @heyimryanhurley

Oooh Houndstooth Ooooh Houndstooth You Made My Cell Phone Faaancy!  I've been told I don't live "in the now" because I have the world's suckiest cell phone. Only it's MY world's suckiest cell phone and unless it blows up or puts my life at risk, I'll continue to love/hate it for as long as we both shall live. It's supposedly a "smartphone" but it's done everything in its power to prove what an idiot it is.  It drops calls (if it gets them at all), it delivers text messages 3 days post-initial contact, and it makes loud angry noises like it's trying to say something but it can only muster a "btoop"- which, by the way, means nothing.  And it's not even good looking! Definitely not enough for me to pretend that it could be smart (like I do with people).  So today, I'm taking my cell phone back! I'm gonna jazz it up so it makes me happier until I'm ready to let it go for good.
Here's what you'll need:

  1. 1 crappy cell phone or plain cell phone case
  2. Fancy-patterned paper or a photo (try to use the thinnest material possible)
  3. Mod Podge
  4. Paint Brush for applying the glue
  5. Exacto knife
  6. Clear coat nail polish

Begin by cutting your faaancy paper around the back half of your cell phone body (usually the battery cover).  Leave about 1/2 inch extra paper around the perimeter.  If you're covering a case, make sure you cut widely enough to cover the whole thing (plus the extra).

Paint the plain side of the paper with Mod Podge and fold over the edges.

Cut a little extra paper off the corners so that the case won't be too bulky. Then glue the inside flaps down.

With the Exacto knife cut along any openings in the casing.

I cut out the camera and the clip-on holes

I used a strong toothpick to poke the holes for the speaker.

Apply a top-coat of nail polish over the patterned side of the paper. Re-poke the holes for the speaker area, making sure no holes are blocked by the clear coat/sealant.

Leave the case out until it dries completely.

There you go! This houndstooth pattern gave my crappy cell phone a high-class makeover!

Please excuse my gigantic "modeling" hand.  (Oh! and my face...)
Try this tutorial using photos or collage images. Purchase clear or plain phone cases in bulk online (this is great for iphones) and make multiple interchanging cases. Who doesn't like a classy chevron pattern in a slew of colors?  It's like developing a low cost but high class wardrobe for your phone! Have fun with this one - there are tons of possibilities!
