SUMMARY
Upon graduation from the Fire Academy, incumbents will control and extinguish fires, respond to fire alarms and other emergency calls, protect life and property, and maintain equipment as an employee of the City.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only, and is not a comprehensive listing of all the duties and responsibilities performed by positions.

  • Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls.
  • Selects hand line, depending on type of fire, directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire, and assists fire cause determination
  • Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings, or to assist individuals from burning structures
  • Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance
  • Protects property from water and smoke by use of waterproof salvage covers, smoke ejectors, and deodorants
  • Administers first aid and artificial respiration to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke
  • Assists paramedics at medical emergencies; applies techniques for the control of bleeding; utilizes techniques to stabilize patient
  • Communicates with superior during fire by portable two-way radio
  • Inspects buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances
  • Give demonstrations, classes, and training to the public
  • Maintains apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, grounds, and hydrants
  • Participates in drills, demonstrations, and courses in hydraulics, pump operation and maintenance, and firefighting techniques
  • Issues forms to building owners listing fire regulation violations to be corrected.
  • Drives and operates firefighting vehicles and equipment
  • Maintains awareness of City geography, water system, and fire hazards
  • Studies City and Fire-Medical Department rules & regulations
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire
  • Must have High School Diploma or G.E.D.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must have at the time of hire and be able to maintain a valid Arizona driver license
  • Possession of a current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) at the time of application
  • Possession of a current CPR certification at the time of application
  • Possession of a current Arizona EMT (EMTP, EMTB) certification at the time of application
