The City of Defiance is currently hiring for Entry level Firefighter/Paramedic.  Candidates are required to take the FireTEAM written exam as well as the Firefighter Mile physical exam through National Testing Network. All testing must be completed by November 21, 2018.

Job Requirements

Age : Between the ages of 18 and 37 at time of appointment

US Citizen : Yes

High School Grad/GED : Yes

Valid OHIO State Driver’s License : Yes

Ability to Read/Speak English : Yes

College : Not required

Academy Certification : Within 1 year of hire

Prior Experience : Preferred

Necessary Certifications :

  • Must obtain and maintain State of Ohio Fire Fighter Level 1 & 2 Certification within one year of service.
  • Must obtain and maintain EMT basic within one year of service.
  • All employees hired are required to obtain Paramedic Certification within three years of completion of his/her probationary period, as a condition of employment. The City pays for paramedic training for those who are not a paramedic upon hire.

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors :

Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: Any felony arrest where the person is convicted. (Does not apply to misdemeanors).

Driving Disqualifiers: Must have a valid Ohio Driver’s License with no driving restrictions.

Drug Use Disqualifiers: Case by case based on situation.

Application Process :

  1. Application: Candidates must complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ). This is considered your application and it can be accessed through your candidate account. Candidates who qualify for Veteran Preference Credit, as outlined at http://cityofdefiance.com/civilservice-commission/, must submit necessary documentation (DD-214) to the city before the application deadline.
  2. Written Testing: Candidates must receive a minimum of 70% on all sections of the National Testing Network exam.
  3. Physical Agility Testing: Candidates must successfully complete the Firefighter Mile through National Testing Network within one year prior to the application
