Police yesterday said that prison guards who were involved in shooting at inmates of Mahara prison in 2020 will be arrested and produced before court in compliance with the order given by the Welisara Magistrate Thusitha Dhammika Udawavidana.
Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa told the Daily News that the Prison guards who were identified during the investigation by the CID will arrested as per the court order.
The Welisara Magistrate on Wednesday declared that the shooting at the protest staged by the Mahara prison inmates demanding treatment for the Covid-19 positive inmates and tests to identify the Covid positive cases, was a crime. He ordered prison officials involved in the shooting be arrested and produced before court.
The Magistrate cited that even though the officials gave evidence that the prison guards were ordered to shoot at unruly inmates below the knee, no inmates had gunshot injuries below the knee.
He noted that 11 inmates had gunshot injuries on their heads, stomach and chest.The shooting took place in 2020.
