I was smitten with CHVRCHES the first time I heard “Lies”, but seeing them live this Tuesday in Williamsburg really sealed the deal. The trio from Scotland are currently touring on the heels of a successful 3 song/2 remix EP with sold out headlining dates and an opening slot for Depeche Mode next month (three songs…what have you done lately?).  Since their NYC debut back in March, the band has tightened up their stage presence, delivering an arsenal of catchy, ear-shattering, bass-driven songs that are almost indistinguishable from their released counterparts.

Backed by the incredible, multi-talented Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, lead vocalist Lauren Mayberry’s unapologetically sweet vocals had the crowd cheering, dancing and spilling beer all over the back of my legs. Highlights included the litany of profanity in Lauren’s banter, the encore cover of Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U” and Martin taking the lead vocals on “Tide”. Catch them this weekend at Firefly before they head back to Europe for a bit, and be sure to join the rest of us eagerly awaiting their debut album slated for a September 24th release.

Opening up the night was dreamy band Still Corners, who have just released a solid second album, Strange Pleasures, on Subpop.
