The S-IB stage was built by the Chrysler corporation at the Michoud Assembly Facility, New Orleans. This one, S/N 209, was standby for Skylab 4 and later designated for any needed rescue of the Apollo-Soyuz mission. It was powered by eight H-1 rocket engines. The four outboard engines were gimballed, allowing them to be steered to control the rocket. Eight fins surrounding the base provided aerodynamic stability and control.
