What is Chronic Laryngitis?
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx. It is called a “voice box” that contains the vocal cords in the upper part of the neck. It can be acute or chronic. Chronic laryngitis is more severe than acute laryngitis as the symptoms are longer-lasting and is a sign of the more serious underlying condition, such as an autoimmune disorder. Chronic laryngitis produces lingering hoarseness and other voice changes. It is usually painless and has no significant sign of infection.
It affects people of any age and gender but is more common in middle age. It is also increasing in those women who are working in industrial environments and/or smoke tobacco. Most cases of laryngitis are triggered by a temporary viral infection but are not serious. Persistent hoarseness signals a more serious underlying medical condition.
What are the Causes of Chronic Laryngitis?
Various factors can cause chronic laryngitis like Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) that causes the stomach content to move up into the esophagus which irritates the throat over time.
Main causes that are associated with, or lead to chronic laryngitis include:
- Bronchitis
- Allergies
- Bacterial infections
- Autoimmune disorders
- Vocal cord polyps or cysts
- Pneumonia
- Acid reflux
- Overuse of the voice, such as in singers and performers
- Infection
- Smoking and excessive alcohol intake
- Steroid inhaler medications
- Chronic sinusitis
- Exposure to chemicals that cause irritation
- In rare cases some inflammatory conditions that affect the vocal cords, such as tuberculosis.
What are the Symptoms of Chronic Laryngitis?
The most common symptom of chronic laryngitis is hoarseness which may persist for at least two weeks. Depending upon the causes of chronic laryngitis, other symptoms include:
- A low and raspy voice
- Hoarseness of voice
- Formation of a lump in the throat or a dry throat
- The urgency to clear the throat
- Heavy mucus in the throat
- Swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck
- Chronic and dry cough
- Discomfort during swallowing
- Tickling sensation in the throat
- Sore throat
- fever
- fatigue
- headaches
- cold or flu-like symptoms
Chronic laryngitis injures the vocal cords over time which develops small growths known as polyps or nodules. These may cause uncomfortable, but do not pose any significant health risk.
