Children are absolutely in love with dogs, and dogs feel the same. That’s usually the case. However, not all kids can enjoy the benefits and love of a dog. Allergic reactions to dog can make choosing a pet dog for your kids (or the family) can be a little bit tricky. But don’t worry, this is still feasible. You just need to make sure that you’re choosing the right kind of dog for children with allergies.

There are no 100 percent allergy-free dogs, but there are dog breeds that are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Dog saliva is the primary cause of allergies. Saliva deposits on the dog’s skin and coat when he licks; then it releases in the shed hair. Shed-free or low-shed dogs cause the least allergic reactions and make the best dogs for kids with allergies.

The first thing that you have to remember when deciding on dogs for children with allergies is that there’s no breed of dog that is 100% free of allergens. BUT there are breeds of dog that are less likely to trigger allergic reactions. Let it be known that it’s usually the dog’s saliva that causes the allergy and not the dog’s coat. In fact, low-shed dogs and/or shed-free canines make the least allergic reactions; hence they’re the kind of dog for children with allergies.

Here are just a couple of the dog breeds that you can choose from.

Maltese

Known to be the gentlest among smaller dog breeds, Maltese is great with kids, even those with dog allergies. Just make sure your Maltese gets regular grooming to keep his long, silky, white hair clean and unthreatening for the kids.

Schnauzer

Aside from being an excellent watchdog, Schnauzer is also great as children’s companion. This breed of dog is known for their playfulness and intelligence. Out of the three Schnauzer sizes, the miniature one is the most recommended kind of dog for children with allergies. Like with the Maltese, regular grooming is required.
