Tesla has worked hard to get its Chinese Model Y manufacturing operations up and running at the huge Gigafactory complex outside of Shanghai, and that hard work has paid off, according to a report released by Reuters on Thursday.
The Big T has started selling the China-built Model Y at a starting price of 339,900 yuan (or $ 52,091.95 at current exchange rates), which is actually only $ 2,191 more than our version of the Model Y Long Range.

Tesla's pricing strategy for the Model Y in the world's largest auto market is simple: undercut the others. Because of this, the Model Y is slightly cheaper than, for example, offers from Nio, which retail for the equivalent of $ 56,329.
Interestingly, while Tesla's Model 3 benefits from China's subsidy for electric vehicles, the Model Y does not qualify because of its price. It's also not entirely clear whether there are any plans to equip the Model Y with the cheaper lithium iron phosphate battery cells from the Base Model 3, which would theoretically lower the price.
Since Tesla doesn't have a PR department, I tweeted about it at Elon Musk, but I'm not holding my breath to get a response.
