Let's all rejoice, sweater season is upon us. Well, for most of us. To you ladies who live in the warmer climates, I don't know how you do it. I get bored way too easily to be able to put up with this. I need four seasons to not die from fashion boredom. This morning I put on a cardigan to run my morning errands and the old I pulled out of my drawer cardigan felt new again because I hadn't worn it in months. Of course, I will be looking to add some new sweaters to my wardrobe this fall, so it felt perfectly fitting to share some chic sweater looks for the upcoming season. After all, by next spring I will completely over my sweaters unless I figure out how to make them look fresh and interesting. Hopefully these chic sweater looks below will help you too.
Chic Sweater Looks for Fall
Outfit #1 If you have been in a store lately, you have probably seen this cropped sweater layered over a button down shirt look. To make it easier, many designers are selling this two-for-one style ready-made which can save you from the hassle of doing it yourself.
In the outfit above, I created this trend using this cropped sweater from J. Crew that I layered over a white button down from Madewell and styled with a pair of skinny jeans from Lucky Brand. For a pop, I added these super chic red suede flats, a blue Marc by Marc Jacobs bag, simple drop earrings from Macy's and a Bauble Bar cuff.
Outfit #2 Sweater vests are very popular this fall. Imagine a relaxed cardigan without the sleeves. Not that you need the definition of what a vest is, but I explain this to you to give you an idea on how to wear these longer, relaxed vests you'll be seeing in the stores, like this vest from Theory. When wearing these types of vests, it's wise to have simple layering pieces to wear underneath, like this long sleeve slim knit top, also from Theory. Alternatively, you can also use a crisp white button down shirt. I have a sweater vest that I often pair with a slim cotton turtleneck.
For this chic sweater look for fall, I styled this vest look with a pair of slim jeans in grey from Boden. When wearing any type of long, relaxed knit, a slim pant is always better instead of a relaxed pair, unless you are 5'11" and 99 lbs. soaking wet. For accessories, I used these Free People booties, cognac leather cuff from Frye, stud earrings from Anna Beck, a cognac fringe bag from Milly (did you know that fringe is in?), and this burgundy scarf from Halogen that picks up the flecks of burgundy in the vest.
Outfit #3 Is a fall wardrobe really complete without a cardigan, or two or three? If you look in the stores there are always a ton of sleeveless tops to consider. This seems to odd to me. Who wants to wear sleeveless tops in the fall and winter? This makes cardigans all the more important. I would be remiss if I didn't include at least one in this post.
In the outfit above, I used this burgundy cardigan from Lucky Brand that I layered over this sleeveless top from French Connection and paired with this pair of causal pants from Rebecca Taylor. The look is finished with a pair of oxfords in nude from BCBGeneration, a soft blue bag from MICHAEL Michael Kors and tassel lariat necklace from Bauble Bar.
Outfit #4 Cardigans for fall aren't just for casual. They can look sharp and neat for work. However, too many basic cardigan looks for work can get really boring if they aren't styled in interesting ways. This can be done with unique color combinations and fun accessories.
Here, for example, I used this mustard cardigan from J. Crew that I layered over a column look consisting of a navy tank from Zara and pleat front midi skirt from Ann Taylor's Icon Collection. To finish the look, I accented this basic outfit with a pair of leopard flats from Splendid, a burgundy bag from Milly, belt from Tory Burch and blush stud earrings from Marc by Marc Jacobs.
Outfit #5 It's not a fall sweater post without the inclusion of a comfy, cozy tunic sweater, like this one from Modcloth, styled with a pair of skinny pants. This outfit looks great with a pair of flat riding boots but also looks fun and updated with a pair of booties, like this heeled pair from MICHAEL Michael Kors. To finish the outfit, I added this colorful scarf from Vince Camuto, a reversible bright orange faux leather tote from Lord & Taylor and cognac leather tassel earrings.
Enjoy your sweaters
The best way to get the most enjoyment from your sweaters is to think your outfits through with your accessories and colorful combinations to keep them feeling fresh and fun all autumn and winter long. I hope these suggestions help.
