Before entering politics, Cheng Li Hui gained 12 years of grassroots experience by assisting the People's Action Party in their Meet-the-People Sessions at the Bukit Panjang Branch.
In the 2015 general election, Cheng made her political debut as part of a five-member PAP team contesting in Tampines GRC and emerged victorious. Consequently, she became the MP representing the Tampines East division of Tampines GRC. In 2016, she was appointed Deputy District Advisor in the PAP Women's Wing.
On July 17, 2023, Cheng Li Hui resigned from both the People's Action Party (PAP) and her parliamentary position along with Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin due to concerns regarding "propriety and personal conduct."
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who also serves as the PAP's Secretary-General, confirmed that they had been involved in an affair since at least 2020.
Consequently, their respective seats in Tampines GRC and Marine Parade GRC remained vacant, and the workload for Cheng's Tampines East division and Tan's Kembangan-Chai Chee division was redistributed among the other MPs in their respective GRCs.
