Catching the last rays of sunset at a specific place sounds great in theory, but in reality it can be a very long wait if unlucky and a frenetic scramble when lucky…
Thankfully, luck was on our side yesterday but we did scramble to meet it. Paulo suggested that we have dinner in Viana do Castelo on our way home from Galicia, and I added that if we hurried I could try to catch Santuário Santa Luzia at sunset from the pousada above it. There was an issue of timing — the church is at the top of a mountain — and finding the right place to stand at the pousada before the sun sank below the horizon. With just a few minutes to spare, we arrived at the top of Monte de Santa Luzia and I ran around the hotel just in time to capture a few shots of the church bathed in sunset gold. Ideally, I would’ve been shooting these images at a higher angle such as from the balcony of a hotel room but that is a challenge for another day. For now, mission complete!
