Cerridwen's Advice.

By Ashleylister @ashleylister
I am probably going to end up repeating other people's advice, because really the best way to develop your writing is to read other people's stuff and write your own. Have a notebook at hand wherever you go. Seriously, inspiration can be triggered by the smallest thing and if you miss the moment and are as flighty minded as me it will be gone and you will be kicking yourself for it. The amount of times i've done that is uncountable, and a few poems or stories could have been written if i'd just remembered to copy down the rough thoughts right away. Even if it doesn't float your boat right away, you can always go back to it.
Create a space in your home for books. And buy books. Lots of books. Funny books, fantasy books, romance books, horror books, erotic books, all kinds of books. Lots of books. So many books that you have to pile them in random places in a precariously balanced mess hoping they don't crush a passing pet or small child. Or a foot. Yes. Books. You could buy a kindle to avoid this mess, but what's the fun in that. You can't write all over a kindle, they don't smell good and you can't throw it in frustration when someone you are fond of dies/gets killed off or engages in sexual activity with some other character you hate.
Go out. I don't know whether it's a writer thing, but i tend to curl into my bedroom and get frustrated when no inspiration comes. So i force myself to go out when this happens now. I go out and watch the world for a little bit. I know our local world is Blackpool which.... well yeah but there's always something to write about.
I'm not a successful writer but i've been doing it from rather young all the way through my adolescence which is combined with frustrations and chaos and it's taught me the best ways to to do it. So yeah. Books, and notebook and world.
