With this episode of The CerebralMix we conclude the Circe episode of Ulysses and move on to the Eumaeus episode, which picks up immediately after the concluding skirmish with bloom picking up Stephen and taking him to a Cabman’s shelter.
Once in the Cabman’s shelter, we are brought into a community where the foundation of the relationships between the characters seems to be based on rumors and innuendo. There is talk of the keeper is rumored to be Skin-the-Goat Fitzharris, the getaway-car driver during the Phoenix Park murders. In this way we have a collision in the narrative between historical events and the rumors that have arisen.
Also notable is the change in the manner of narrative in this episode. unlike the previous episodes, this portion has a feeling of being written by an amateur author. As if it were someone that was trying to impress the reading by being erudite, and going about it in all the wrong ways. (This is a point that will be expounded upon in future notes for the series.)
