Centralia Homeowner Fights Knife-wielding Intruder with Shotgun Until Deputies Arrive

The Olympian: A Lewis County (Washington State) couple “did what they had to do to protect themselves under very dangerous conditions” after an armed intruder entered their home in the 2900 block of Little Hanaford Road in Centralia, said Sheriff Steve Mansfield.

According to a news release issued Monday morning:

The couple called 911 at about 7:30 a.m. Friday to report that a stranger, armed with a knife, entered their home through an unlocked sliding glass door.

The 62-year-old homeowner got a shotgun and ordered the intruder out of the house, but the suspect shoved him downstairs and into the yard. The suspect then walked back into the house, and the homeowner’s girlfriend pushed the suspect back onto the porch. Then, the suspect picked up a machete that belonged to the homeowner.

“At this time, the homeowner struck (the suspect) in the head with the shotgun he was holding and then held him at gunpoint until deputies arrived,” the news release stated.

Nobody could understand what the suspect was saying, and authorities believe the man may have been under the influence of an intoxicating substance, officials say.

The man, a 43-year-old homeless man, was treated at Centralia Providence Hospital for a laceration on his head, and booked into Lewis County Jail for investigation of first-degree burglary.

“This is another example of why citizens need to take all possible precautions and be prepared if something like this occurs,” Mansfield said. “Lock your doors, be aware and cautious, and have a plan of action for how you would respond in a situation such as this. Your success in surviving an encounter like this is greatly enhanced by your pre-planning.

My idea of pre-planning:

Score one for the Second Amendment!
