Celebrating SAHDad – Dinner Out

By Specialneedmom2 @specialneedmom2

Our family has bad days.  I’m sure yours does too.  We have good days as well, those days when schedules are followed, meals are made and people are where they’re supposed to be when they are supposed to be there.  On those good days everyone is well fed and well rested.  Those are the good days.

Recently our family had a bad day.  Hubby is Stay-at Home Dad while I work outside of the home.  He dealt with the bad day while I just did damage control.

That morning five year old Mr. Sensitive woke up at 4 am and couldn’t go back to sleep.  He was exhausted and grumpy by the time he had to leave for school.  He refused to eat.  We knew that it was better to keep Mr. Sensitive at home that day, but Hubby had a couple appointments to go to and it would be easier if Mr. Sensitive went to school.

Hubby juggled dropping Mr. Sensitive and I off at our respective school/work places, then took Little Miss Adorable and Baby Dunk to appointments, only to find one appointment was canceled.  At the second appointment the therapist yelled at Hubby for missing an appointment that was supposed to happen a few weeks earlier.

Hubby raced home after the appointment to prepare dinner, only to find all the water in our building was shut off.  Emergency repairs.

Hubby ignored the towering mountain of dirty dishes in the sink and rooted through the freezer looking for something to cook without water.

Soon it was time to meet Mr. Sensitive at his bus and pick me up from work.

The bus door opened, and the exhausted Mr. Sensitive was sobbing hysterically and the very concerned bus driver was worried about him, “I’ve never seen him like this before.”  Hubby carried Mr. Sensitive into our home and tried to calm him with juice boxes and Netflix.  Hubby called me to say he’d be late picking me up.

An hour and a half later, Hubby picked me up from work.

I got in the car.  Hubby said, ask the kids what happened.  Simultaneously, three kids yelled, cried, and said, “Bump!”

Hubby explained that as they were leaving to pick me up, the elevator in our building, which is notoriously poorly serviced, dropped a few floors with a big bump, scaring everyone.

Hubby then started to tell me about his day.  Before we left the parking lot I whipped out my cell phone and made a reservation for dinner at a buffet restaurant.

Sometimes you have to celebrate just getting through the day.

What does your family do when they have a bad day?
