The Catch Bar has a long history in it's native Ireland, where it was first produced in Tallaght, County Dublin in 1976. It's still very popular in Ireland and also across the West Indies, including Trinidad & Tobago where it's now manufactured. Even though it can be quite hard to find in the UK, it's well worth tracking it down. It's a delicious combination of soft caramel and crisped rice covered in milk chocolate.
The bright red packaging features fun puffed rice lettering, which reflects one of the main components of this bar. However, the best thing about the Catch bar's appearance is just how big it is! It weighs in at 50g, positively a behemoth in comparison to other chocolate bars.
I couldn't resist the following comparison shot, with a couple of new chocolate bars waiting for review (Wonka Millionaire's Shortbread and Quality Street My Green Bar), just to show off the size of the Catch bar!
The impressive nature of the Catch bar continues in the abundant core of caramel within. The caramel has a medium texture, not too soft or hard, almost like a fudge. The flavor is sweet but not overly so and provides a perfect center to the crunchier outer layers. Crisped rice and chocolate is a classic combination and one that always seems to work very well together. I loved the smooth flavor of the outer chocolate and the light crunchy texture from the rice.
I was very kindly sent a generous amount of Catch bars from their lovely people in Ireland, so I've been able to share out some bars with a few family and friends - and everyone has absolutely loved it. I hope the Catch bar will become more widely available in the UK soon as I'm sure it would be very popular.
