Cassels – ‘A Snowflake in Winter’

Cassels have shared ‘A Snowflake in Winter’ ahead of tour dates with Brutus and an appearance at Truck Festival this July.

Inspired by Trump and Brexit, the song finds Jim Beck examining his own thoughts and behavior and how he found himself ‘deep inside an echo chamber’ of liberal thinking that everything would turn out OK (on that note, if you haven’t watched Adam Curtis’ Hypernormalisation documentary, do so now).

Jim realises now how by doing nothing and not understanding the level of frustration from those who didn’t share the same views as him that he failed to stand up to his own proud statements of how ‘things need to change’ – words you might have said and not backed up as well (I’m certainly guilty of this).

Musically, ‘A Snowflake in Winter’ combines ear-shattering art rock riffs with Meet Me in St Louis-style shouts of ‘No way! Snowflake!’ and self-confessional lyrics: ‘I like to think I’m a deep thinker. And I’m pretty sure I’m a person with conviction. In reality I know I’m a snowflake in winter, blown along on the wind of the latest liberal opinion’. He also considers how ‘believing the general public will level-headedly consider all the available facts and figures before rushing to make rash decisions’ ended up being a huge mistake…
