Cashmere Cat – “Mirror Maru”

Norwegian producer August Hoiberg (AKA Cashmere Cat) just released his debut EP, Mirror Maru, and though the title track has been making the rounds for a few months, its been gaining some internet steam in the past few days. And it’s not hard to see why: Cashmere Cat produces the kind of DJ music that skews more towards bubblegum pop and anime theme songs than the dreaded “house music.” “Mirror Maru” is resplendent with weird squeaks, cheesy piano riffs, tom rolls, and synthetic string parts that leap at you from the 70s. There is something severely video game-inflicted about this song, whose title references famous internet cat Maru; whatever the influence, it does Cashmere Cat’s fantastically catchy instrumental track well.
