Barack Obama’s Old Letters Made Public By Emory University
A series of handwritten notes have been obtained by Emory University’s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript and will be available to the public for the first time. There are 9 letters in total, all from Barack Obama to Alexandra McNear, his girlfriend at Occidental College in Los Angeles. The letters not only detail the disheveled romantic relationship between the two, but shed light on Mr. Obama’s formative years — the unease in his own identity, sense of isolation, and even the very regular aspects of being a college student. The notes were written from the fall of 1982 to the spring of 1984.
Few of us would want the love letters we wrote to our sweethearts at age 21 released to the public. Thanks, Obama. https://t.co/u9kQ61Nc7z

The letters come after Barack transferred to Columbia University across the country, and the fact that the couple is on the verge of a break-up is obvious in the letters. One of the letters from a 22-year-old Obama begins, “Somehow a clutter of numbers and appointments and bills had grown over your last letter. Hearing your voice was like discovering a passage in a book I had read a while ago.” Though it becomes obvious among the writings that the two have grown apart, these letters also showcase how articulate and poetic Mr. Obama is with one passage reading, “I trust you know that I miss you, that my concern for you is as wide as the air, my confidence in you as deep as the sea, my love rich and plentiful.” Whew…these letters make Tupac’s poetry to Jada Pinkett look live child’s play!
It definitely seems like an invasion of privacy to read such intimate letters from a young and unassuming future president, but the excerpts are beautifully written and showcase just how well-spoken Barack has always been. It’s unknown where these letters have been until now and who brought them to Emory University to be put on display, but they’re as flattering as love letters to a college sweetheart can be. Not a surprise that our beautifully commanding president has always been this well-spoken.
