Anthony and Joe Russo direct the sequel to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. The story picks up a couple of years after the events of The Avengers movie. Captain America, a.k.a Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), has for the most part acclimated to life as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. His life pretty much revolves around various missions assigned to him from Nick Furry (Samuel L. Jackson). Scarlett Johansson plays Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow.
The overwhelming theme of this movie is trust. There are some major plot reveals that I don’t want to spoil to you the reader. Therefore, I have to remain somewhat vague and brief in this review. As usual, the superhero has to save millions of people from the “bad guys.” This time around Captain America meets a formidable foe in the Winter Soldier.
It’s rare for a sequel to better the original; however the Russo brothers pull off the feat. In an age of never-ending superhero films hastily developed by movie industries for the hopes of creating a “cash-cow” I have to say that Marvel Comics, with the backing of Disney, has done a fine job in adapting the comic book characters. While Captain America wasn’t one of my favorite super heroes in my adolescence (I feel somewhat unpatriotic just saying it) these movies are definitely one of the better ones.
Unlike Iron Man 3 who garnered rave reviews, Captain America: The Winter Soldier deserves the praise. There was a good mix of action sequences that probably would look great on IMAX and scenes for character development. I thought the movie got more enjoyable as it progressed. There were also elements of humor throughout the film, which was appreciated.
Overall, I was happily impressed by this sequel. It is definitely worth the price of admission, even if you aren’t a super hero geek. As I eluded in the previous paragraph, I would suggest maybe seeing it in IMAX, but I don’t think it is worth it to see in 3D. Don’t know if it’s necessary.
Hope you enjoy the film!
*As typical of a Marvel film, there are 2 extra scenes. One after the main cast is credited and then at the end of the credits.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (intense sequences of violence, gunplay and action throughout)
Running Time: 136 minutes
My Grade: B+
