Introduction

Candide Pt 4: CerebralMix 2014-09-05

It’s time for the fourth installment in the Candide series of the CerebralMix.  We made notice this week that religious figures tend to not fare all that well in this story.   I’ve also notice that the portrayal of Candide is that of someone who is always trying to do good, but seems to have a bit of a hair-trigger.  In this section ha manages to kill a priest and two monkeys (admittedly, he is a good shot since he took out both monkeys in one shot).

There is also a bit of the stereotyping going on again, as an as-yet-to-be-name land is portrayed as allowing, or actually encouraging animal procreation with humans.  It is pointed out that this practice is likely the origin of many creatures in Greek and Roman mythologies.

The whole thing is an interesting test for the core tenet of “all is for the best”.  Of course, the level of brilliance Voltaire has shown in taking the story into some of the wildest directions imaginable is what makes reading a dis-proof of a philosophical concept so much fun.

Readings

In the past I’ve reproduced the text of the poems or short pieces that I read during the show. However, with the text of Candide being much longer, I think it is better to grab a copy of the book to read along with the show if you so wish.

The reading by Ted Delorme is based on the Modern Library version from 1918. A copy of this version of the book can obtained from the Internet Archive: Modern Library – Voltaire’s Candide. This book is available in all the all of the major eBook formats: ePub, PDF, Kindle, HTML, Daisy and DjVu.

In the playlist below is a link to the LibriVox version of the audio book. The version presented in the show has been modified a bit (removed the opening and closing LibriVox credits on each chapter to make it flow better with the show, normalized the audio level, and created a stereo version from the original mono source files for streaming).
