Introduction

CerebralMix 2014-09-28: Candide Pt. 3

This week we continue with the third installment of Voltaire’s Candide as read by Ted Delome for LibriVox. The thing that has always gotten to me about this book is that it almost seems to be a stream of consciousness piece of writing.  But nothing could be further from the truth, in fact.  While the plot is quick moving with events such as the death of the Grand inquisitor and the Jew, the escape of Cunegonde, Candide and the Old Woman there is a some heavily relied on stereotypes of different races, historical references, and what I think actually comes down to almost  blatant prejudice.

However, all of this is really just being used as a form of short hand.  It’s a quick way to cast events into place that allow Voltaire to make the story move quickly, and to make things like the reason the old Woman only has one buttock to sit both tragic and extremely funny simultaneously.  It’s amazing in a respect, in this time we couldn’t get away without this kind of story telling being highly controversial, yet in Voltaire’s time it was accepted as the norm in its own way.

Readings

In the past I’ve reproduced the text of the poems or short pieces that I read during the show. However, with the text of Candide being much longer, I think it is better to grab a copy of the book to read along with the show if you so wish.

The reading by Ted Delome is based on the Modern Library version from 1918. A copy of this version of the book can obtained from the Internet Archive: Modern Library – Voltaire’s Candide. This book is available in all the all of the major eBook formats: ePub, PDF, Kindle, HTML, Daisy and DjVu.

In the playlist below is a link to the LibriVox version of the audio book. The version presented in the show has been modified a bit (removed the opening and closing LibriVox credits on each chapter to make it flow better with the show, normalized the audio level, and created a stereo version from the original mono source files for streaming).
