Job description
Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. awarded prior to August 19, 2015. Specialization in Philosophy of Science with a background in Elementary Education. Secondary interests may include: Philosophy of Science Education; Philosophy of Education; History of Science. Candidates must demonstrate ability to effectively work with a diverse student population.
Evidence of teaching effectiveness and potential for successful research, publication and other scholarly/ professional/ creative activities required, with publication in field of specialization desirable.

At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.
Responsibilities: The University especially seeks individuals who will contribute to both their chosen disciplines and the University’s commitment to teacher preparation and general education. All faculty are expected to serve on departmental and/or university committees and to advise students. The standard teaching load at Northridge is 12 units per semester, although reassigned time is available for research and/or curriculum development on a competitive basis. The successful candidate will continue to contribute to teaching effectiveness and conduct research, publication and other scholarly/ professional/ creative activities.
The Liberal Studies Program is an interdisciplinary major, which offers a degree program under the College of Humanities leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies. The Liberal Studies major is designed to provide a broad, undergraduate liberal arts education, with a balance among the language arts, natural sciences and mathematics, humanities, visual and performing arts, and social sciences. This position emphasizes the connection between elementary science education and the philosophy of teaching science. This position requires collaborative co-teaching across departments and programs and encourages interdisciplinary approaches to elementary education. Candidates will be required to teach ITEP courses (Integrated Teacher Education Program) for the Liberal Studies Program, as well as courses in the philosophy of science and the philosophy of biology for the Philosophy Department. The tenure-line will be housed in the Liberal Studies Program.

Short-listed applicants will be interviewed, after which selected candidates will be invited for campus interviews. Application should include a cover letter that specifically addresses the qualifications of the job description, a CV, three letters of recommendation (dated within the last 3 years), brief writing sample (approx. 15-20 pages), and a statement of the candidate’s teaching philosophy and evidence of teaching excellence. Evidence of potential for publication desirable.
