Brouwerij Slaghmuylder is better known under its Witkap Pater label of abbey inspired beers. The Stimulo is their version of an Abbey Single Ale. It would be the lowest alcohol beer brewed at a monastery for everyday consumption (you can learn more about singles at my Q & Ale article about the subject). Singles are a pretty rare beer, even in Belgium. This is one of the few that has a decent availability in the US. This beer is imported by the folks at Vanberg & Dewulf, which have an excellent portfolio of European beers. As spring seems to be setting in, I thought I’d do some reviews on great beers to welcome back the sun. This beer is ideal for that. It’s light and refreshing with enough body to hold up to a cool, rainy spring day.
Appearnce: Pale straw with a bit of haze (if you’re careful, you can pour it pretty bright but the yeast adds a nice hazy touch), huge white head with great retention.
Aroma: Lemon zest, spice, light garden herbs, banana, fruity esters, a touch grassy.
Taste: Spritzy, light grainy notes and a great yeast character. Great medium yeasty finish.
Overall Impression: This is a balanced, flavorful beer. It’s ideal for spring and summer. Don’t serve it too cold, or you’ll mute the lovely, subtle flavors.
Availability: At better bottle shops where other Vanberg & Dewulf products are sold.
