Even though brewery founder, Vincent Dilewyns, has beer in his blood, his ancestors owned a brewery, it was only in 1999 that he brewed his first beer. His ancestors’ brewery went out of business when the Germans took their copper kettles during WWII. Dilewyns started out as one of the earlier “hobbybrouwerijs,” basically a garage nano brewery. Over this period, the beers began to draw attention and win awards leading to the purchasing of a brewing site in 2010.
In 2011, Brouwerij Dilewyns opened officially as a full-fledged brewery with Vincent’s daughters Anne-Catherine & Claire at the helm. This brewery is quickly earning world-wide fans because of their great story and amazing beers, including this winter beer.
Fun Fact: The horse on the label has four female riders on it, symbolizing Vincent’s 4 daughters.
Vicaris Tripel was Brouwerij Dilewyns first beer.
Appearance: Lightly hazy pale gold, off-white head, solid retention.
Aroma: Coriander, lemon, candi sugar, wheat bread, pepper.
Taste: Slightly sweet, with yeasty notes, fruity, peppery finish.
Overall Impression: Some tripels can be a bit “moody.” This one is much more on the “bright” side. The mouthfeel is velvety with an intense carbonation and a medium finish. It’s also got a great amount of character. Dilewyns has managed to create some phenomenally characterful beers in only a few short years, this Tripel is certainly one of them. While they don’t have the brand name recognition of many older breweries, the quality and house style is certainly something that leads me to believe they’ve got a bright future ahead of them. You don’t see this tripel on shelves very often, but if you do, don’t hesitate to pick it up. It’s fantastic.
Availability: In limited quantities. Imported by the fine folks at Vanberg & Dewulf.
