Before Kissel took the stage for a stripped-down, strings only set, KX96 and KX94.7 joined forces to announce the 2020 Toronto Country Megaticket lineup. It all starts in June with Sugarland and continues with Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum, Dean Brody, and wraps with the Rascal Flatts farewell tour stop in early September. More on all of those shows in a minute.
Just after 8 PM, Brett Kissel took The Horseshoe Tavern stage for the very first time in his career. That lineup out front became a packed room and they were loud for the Alberta-native. He looked excited as he started with Airwaves, 3, 2, 1, and Cool With That. The excitement was earned. The crowd was hot, and the list of acts that play The Horseshoe Tavern for a full house on their first time. Especially on a Tuesday.
The set continued and included fan favourites like We Were That Song, Drink, Cuss Or Fish, and his #1 single Drink About Me. And as a nice little bonus, Brett threw in covers of Travis Tritt's It's A Great Day To Be Alive and John Denver's Thank God I'm A Country Boy. Throughout the room fans were singing along, holding up free Budweisers thanks to the sponsor. Phones were up to snap photos and videos. And for a Tuesday night, it was a real good country music time.
Now, back to the 2020 Country Megaticket. The six-show lineup is packed with big name country artists that will headline the stage by the lake. When we saw the lineup on Tuesday night, we started making notes and some immediate thoughts came to mind for each of the shows coming to Toronto as part of the package...
1. Sugarland is back, baby! We can't wait to hear the hits and see what Jennifer and Kristian play.
2. Jason Aldean is going to be loud with lots of guitars, and in the words of Bryan Adams, is a rock band that plays country music.
3. Tim McGraw!!! There are so many hits that we can't wait to hear thousands of country music fans singing along to.
4. Lady Antebellum return with a new album and they know exactly how to take over the Budweiser Stage.
5. Dean Brody returns to the Budweiser Stage for the fourth year in a row (and he played the CNE the summer before that) and given his track record, we know it's going to be great and we're going to get some very special guests.
6. Rascal Flatts are the perfect end to the 2020 Country Megaticket lineup in Toronto. The hit-making, award-winning, fan-loved trio is on their way out as they bring the Life Is A Highway Farewell Tour to town. It's going to be special and memorable.
