Havenese is Cuba’s national dog and the country’s only native dog breed. Also known as Havanese Cuban Bichon, Bichon Havanais, and Havaneser, Havanese is a Bichon-type breed that was developed from the now extinct Blanquito de la Habana, which meant “little white dog of Havana.

Recognized as an old breed, Havanese’s ancestors were brought to Cuba from Spain. This breed, also commonly known as the Havana Silk Dog, evolved from its role as once pampered lap-dog of the high society to now as family companion, a watchdog, and a kid’s playmate.

Physical wise, if not groomed, Havanese exhibits a rugged impression.

Eyes – dark-colored, covered with long, silky hair

Nose – solid black in shade

Lips – solid black in shade

Legs – strong, allow easy movements

Tail – long, covered with long, silky hair

The Havenese’s coat ranges from wavy to curly to corded (recognized by AKC and CKC). This breed is double-coated with soft hair on both outer and under coat.

When it comes to color, Havanese comes in any color; although the most usual are cream, gold, silver, black, white, and blue. The breed can also be parti and tricolor. In North America, all colors are acknowledged. Although in some European countries, the black and chocolate colored Haveneses weren’t always recognized.
